about

'K'viria' is an ancient ritual song from Svaneti, a historically-isolated and independent province in mountainous northwestern Georgia.

The song is thought to have been originally dedicated to the supreme sun deity, K'virike. Following the adoption of Christianity, which had spread to Georgia by the third century AD, the pagan ritual assumed the characteristics of a summertime church festivity.

Early in the morning of St. K'virike's Day, villagers would bring provisions for a feast to church, including sheep for slaughter. 'K'viria' was sung when the church icon was carried out into the church yard.

lyrics

O— k'viria-i
K'viria-i

Mizh dets'esh k'viria
gimlits'ish k'viria
sae woda
ia oria orie o!

O–k'vira
mizh k'viria, mizh k'vira, wo k'viria wo.
ia orie orie o!

O, K'viria! Sun of the heavens!
K'viria! Almighty K'viria!
