about

A medley of settings of the German chorale tune. The first is a choral setting by Hugo Distler, the second is an instrumental rittornello also by Distler, and the third is a setting by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Distler wrote his ritornello for flute, violin and viola. Our version is with flute, clarinet and french horn.

lyrics

Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern,
Voll Gnad und Wahrheit von dem Herrn,
Die süße Wurzel Jesse.
Du Sohn David aus Jakobs Stamm,
Mein König und mein Bräutigam,
Hast mir mein Herz besessen.
Lieblich, freundlich, schön und herrlich,
Groß und ehrlich, reich von Gaben,
Hoch und sehr prächtig erhaben.

How beautiful shines the morning star,
full of grace and truth from the Lord,
the sweet root of Jesse.
Son of David, from Jacob's stem,
my king and my bridegroom,
you have taken possession of my heart,
dear, kind, handsome, and splendid,
great and honorable, rich in gifts,
high and most gloriously sublime
